Excerpt: Words dried up between them and the awkward silence closed in again, so Eris cranked the volume on the stereo and let the music ease the tension.

She hated this, hated that uncomfortable strain that blocked communication between them. Only days before they’d been so close. She’d confessed her love and he had confessed his, but then she’d gone and screwed everything up by having sex with Ash. She knew Joe could never forgive her, and their chance at happiness was lost. Eris shouldn’t be surprised, but it didn’t make her heart hurt any less. She needed to apologize to him, to clear the air between them.

“I’m sorry,” she whispered, and the words nearly caught in her throat. “I didn’t mean to hurt you, Joe. I love you so much.” Tears flowed.

His jaw flexed. His fists closed and opened at his sides. She knew he was hurting bad, and it killed her to know she was the cause of it.

“I told you I loved you and you tore my heart out.” His words came out a rasped growl. “Do you know how long it took me to work up the guts to say that to you? I’ve loved you since we were seven years old, Eris. Since you took my hand and led me onto that playground. But you’re Ash’s girl. You always will be. I should’ve known better.”

“It doesn’t have to be that way, Joe.” She took one hand from the steering wheel and reached out to touch him, but he flinched away.

Too late. The damage was done. She’d broken his heart, and Eris knew Joe would never open up to her again. Tears blurred her vision, but she blinked them away.

I sat naked, alone in the dressing room. When the door banged open, my first instinct was to grab for my robe. But when Peter Magnus, my latest in a string of step dads, walked in, I let the silky wrap fall to the floor.

“Shit.” I sighed and straightened my back, so my large tits stuck out invitingly. “I’m guessing Mom told you.”

His broad shoulders almost brushed the splintered frame as he stepped inside. Mom had latched onto this lead singer of the traditional metal band Iscariot’s Glory six months ago. Excerpt: Rhonda let her overnight bag slip from her shoulder as she shouted, “Hello?” again. Emptiness made the word echo too loudly.

She’d come home from college to celebrate her mother’s birthday. She’d phoned ahead, too, so Mom would expect her visit, and they could plan a long weekend together. However, it looked liked Carla Fielding had ditched her, as usual. Sighing, she went to the kitchen to look for a note, hoping for the best, hating herself for thinking the worst.

No note waited, so she assumed Carla was out with Denny—the latest in her mother’s never ending string of disposable boyfriends. Rhonda admired her mom’s sexual liberation. She just wished the woman picked better lovers. Not ones who encouraged Carla’s drinking. From her last visit during Christmas break, she knew mom had quit her AA meetings for the new guy in her life.

She tried to push thoughts of Mom from her mind to keep from worrying. While she searched the fridge for something to eat, the intercom next to the oven buzzed, making her jump.

She pushed the button and spoke. “Mom?”

“Hey, girl.” The voice of her ex-step dad, Ricky Moretti, drifted through the antiquated speaker. “It’s cold out here. Let me in.”

She laughed. “You sound like one of your cheesy love songs.”

“Ouch,” he said, but she heard him chuckle. “Nice to see you’ve still got a mouth on you.”

Rhonda pushed the button to unlock the gate and tried to ignore the thudding of her heart. Quickly, she ran to the large oval mirror in the foyer to check her appearance. Her eyes were too big and far apart, but at least the mascara and eyeliner brought out the amber of her irises. She hated her glasses, and thought once again of laser surgery, but the expenses of college made her practical side rule that out for now. Her hair looked nice—shiny and golden brown, with just a touch of red. Frowning drew her cupid bow lips down, as she poked her nose, which she found too big for her long face. She pulled her purple sweater over her slender hips and turned sideways. What she saw looked pretty good, but she’d always thought herself somewhat frumpy. Still, it would have to do.

Ricky Moretti was the only man her mother had married that fit into the ‘nice guy’ category. Generally, Mom was attracted to slime, but Ricky was one of the rare few Carla had been with that Rhonda had truly connected with, even looked up to and thought of as her protector at one time. He’d even set up a trust fund for Rhonda when he and Carla split three years ago.

Lead guitarist of the hard rock band Devoid, Ricky had made a name for himself during the 80s as a superior axe shredder. When Carla married him, Rhonda had been star-struck. She’d been a big fan of his band, and his guitar-playing in particular. Labeled the “rock ‘n’ roll baddie with boy-next-door looks” by the media, Ricky was the most elusive member of Devoid.

As a hormonal teen, it had been sheer torture living with a man she lusted after, but was too young to act on her wants.  Now, she pondered the prospect of seducing her former step dad. How would he feel if she confessed her longstanding crush? Would it weird him out, since he’d acted like the only real dad she’d ever known those brief years mom and he were married? Mickie inhaled sharply as his warm, wide palm slid across her lower back then over her hip. He held her close against him while she spread mayo on their sandwiches.

“I’m good,” she said, trying to keep her voice even as his nearness intoxicated her. “Working on a hot story I hope my boss doesn’t hold up for too long.”

“Oh yeah? What’s it about?”

“Can’t say too much.” She gave him an impish smile. “It’s very hush hush.”

He snagged a slice of cheese off the counter and popped it in his mouth. “So you’re staying the summer with me and Hunter?” Another devilishly handsome smile followed the question.

Mickie tried to keep her breathing even and chided herself for such a schoolgirl reaction. “Yeah, Dad asked me to stay here. Said you were coming home, and he knows what happens when he leaves you and Hunter alone together.”

Shane laughed at this and held a hand to his chest, feigning innocence. “What? We’re angels.”

Mickie giggled and handed him his finished sandwich, but he just pushed it aside and turned her in his arms so she faced him.

He trailed a soft fingertip along the length of her jaw, then he traced her lips. “This could be one fun summer. But do you really think you can make me behave?”

It had been almost twelve months since she’d spent any real time with her stepbrothers. Plus it had been over a year since she’d broken up with her longtime boyfriend. And it had been a dry year sexually. Her ex had been a reporter at the paper, too, and he’d cheated on her with one of the staff photographers. An old flame of his.

Now, as her stepbrother’s lips inched closer to hers, Mickie didn’t think she’d have the strength to refuse Shane this time. “I’m gonna try,” she whispered in answer to his question. “But if you keep this up—”

Her words were stolen as his mouth brushed ever so lightly over hers. “Hmmm…”He hummed against her lips. “I wonder if Dad has anything for dessert in there?”

Then he pulled away from her. A surge of disappointment filled Mickie’s chest, but he held onto her hand as he walked closer to the fridge and bent to see what was inside. What was he up to? Her heartbeat upped its pace.

“Ah, perfect,” he said, reaching in for something. “He doesn’t have cherries, but…” His gaze glued to her pert nipples, showing through her bra and white tank top.

Mickie’s throat went dry when he held up the can of whipped cream. She held up her hands. “Look, Shane, I’m suppose to make sure you behave, not make out with you.”

Kyle comes behind me and I grind my ass against him. His hands run the length of my sides and down, as my hips gently rock into him. His smell is so familiar that for a few minutes I allow myself to become intoxicated by it. Turning, I look into his blue eyes as I sway seductively in front of him.

All I know is that I enjoy it too much for someone who’s just had her heart broken. My entire body melts against him as he works my tongue with his own. “Get the fuck off of her,” Sebastian growls.

“Whoa! Chill,” Kyle replies.

My blood runs cold when I look up at him. His gray eyes are edging dangerously close to black. His teeth are gritted and the vein on his forehead is visible. I watch as his flexed jaw clenches with tension. This is why I can’t be with him. The demons that live inside of him, fueling this aggression. I can’t be around it. I’m not safe.

“Let’s go, Kyle,” I say, desperately. “No one wants any trouble.”

“You can’t be serious,” Sebastian scoffs. “You’re not going anywhere with him, Danielle.”

He grabs my arm and I feel as though my heart leaps into my throat. Remembering to focus on my breathing, I fight the panic attack that I can feel coming on.

“Let go of me, Sebastian,” I reply. “This isn’t the place for this.”

“You’re not going anywhere, but outside with me,” he says, pulling me off the dance floor.

“I don’t think so, Black,” Kyle says. “I get it. You screwed things up and now you can’t live with yourself. I’ve been there, but this possessive bullshit isn’t going to happen tonight. Danielle isn’t one of your properties. You don’t get to decide who can or cannot enter.”

Before I can say anything in my own defense, Sebastian’s fist meets Kyle’s jaw. I scream for them to stop, but it’s useless. Kyle stumbles a little before retaliating and hitting Sebastian on the corner of his eye. Everyone around us comes to a stop. I can barely hear my own thoughts as chants and screams break out from the crowd.
