Excerpt: I button up my thick cable knit sweater and let the wind whip my strawberry blonde hair about my pale, plain face as I walk from my Honda to Sydney Harbour. Fat seagulls are out in full force today, giving me a baleful eye that says if I don’t have food I’m not welcome in their territory. For all their puffing of chest and squawking, I know the birds are harmless, and I grin at their antics.

I board my boat, the Sea Enchantress, and wait. I’m sure there will be no late comers for a charter boat tour today. I use my grandpa Horace’s old lobster boat to take folks on whale, seal, and puffin watching tours. But I can’t really compete with the fancier setups many other charter companies have and I’m barely hanging on to my tiny, one person company.

Still I keep the boat to feel close to Grandpa Horace. It’s all I have left of him, after he disappeared into the Atlantic Ocean on one trip out to her watery depths. The Sea Enchantress came back without him, and Horace Griffiths was never heard from again. But if business doesn’t pick up, I’ll have to sell the boat soon and look for a source of income elsewhere.

“He’s still alive out there, somewhere,” I often tell my mother, who my grandparents had helped out after she became a single mom with the death of my own father, who was killed by his watery mistress. At least his body was recovered.

Mother just shakes her head at me. “He’s gone, love, and he isn’t coming back. Let him rest.”
But no matter how many years pass, I still can’t shake the feeling my grandpa, a lobster fisherman and charter boat captain before me, is still out there somewhere. And one day I will find him.

Just as I’m checking over the boat, two men walk down the pier toward my vessel.

“I’m not going.” He sticks his bottom lip out and pouts like a little kid.

“You have to!” I plead, knowing he needs the money as much as I do. I’m a single mom with two boys to feed and a old house to repair. Jake is a carpenter whose work has been slow as of late.

“I don’t have to do anything for that perverted bastard,” he says, jumping off his bed and heading to the door that leads from his small apartment into the garage.

“He’s not perverted,” I yell after him as he storms down the stairs. “He’s got a very healthy attitude toward sex experimentation. You could learn something from him. I already have.”

This stops him. His hand freezes on the scuffed, gold painted doorknob and he whirls on me with a dark scowl. “Yeah, he taught me a lot all right. Taught me that I don’t know you at all.”

And with that he storms out of the apartment, opens the garage, gets into his beat up car, and drives off, kicking up clods of mud as he roars away from the house.

I pad back inside the house, hoping the kids haven’t been woken up by our argument. Fate smiles on me this time, for I find them sleeping snugly in the bunk beds that occupy their room. I breathe a sigh of relief as I quietly close the door then head to the kitchen to think and make a cup of tea.

If Jake really plans on quitting his new job testing sex toys, and now performing in sex clubs, then I have to prepare an explanation for Dom Luke. And who knows if Jake will babysit the kids while I go perform as planned. Since it’s a nighttime engagement at the sex club, the kids won’t be in school, so in case Jake doesn’t pan out I decide I’ll ask Mrs. Granger across the road to look after the boys for me. Now I’ve just got to come up with a reasonable explanation for needing her, since I can’t exactly tell her I’m working for a British dom who’s part of the sex industry.

I’m no Carl Jung, but I’ve got a way with words and people. I’m a part of the management team, but I often find myself doubling as a fighter’s armchair therapist.

Lately, David “the Beast” Harker, one of our heavyweights and a prime candidate to win the heavyweight championship, has entered a downward spiral. He’s lost both of the last matches he’s fought--a prior unheard of happening in the Beast’s impressive record of only one loss over a career spanning thirty plus matches. He’s been surly to the media, way beyond the image bravado many fighters in this industry use to psych out their opponent. And he’s missed three meetings Daniel has called with him.

It all started when we signed for a match pitting him against current heavyweight champion, Jacques St. Pierre--media darling and a force to be reckoned with in the ring. I’ve never known the Beast to get so unnerved by an opponent, and my gut tells me more than this upcoming title match is bothering him.

I drive over to the Strength gym where our fighters practice and train. There I find the Beast sparring with another heavyweight inside one of the three smaller practice cages we have. He doesn’t notice me approaching the wire mesh until I call out to him.

“Hey Beast,” I say, and his massive head turns. “Come here.” I curl a finger at him.
