Excerpt: Jenna smiled at the picture of her and Caleb. It was taken at senior prom. Both of them had been eighteen and so much in love. The look of pure joy on their faces made her heart ache for him.

She hadn’t seen Caleb in over a year. Work had been hectic. She was climbing the corporate ladder and so was he. They called and texted each other often, but it wasn’t the same as seeing that drop dead sexy smile, or being wrapped in one of his strong, unforgettable hugs. She needed some Caleb time badly. Unfortunately, he worked on the East Coast and her home base was on the West Coast. It made seeing each other often difficult.

Mom and Dad’s tenth anniversary was coming up though, and she and Caleb would be flying in to celebrate. Jenna had a question for Caleb—an important proposition—and she only hoped he’d accept it. Nervous energy fluttered through her stomach when she thought about it.

High school sweethearts. They’d been inseparable. A superstar couple at Mount Sentinel Secondary. Prom King and Prom Queen, but their relationship ended when Jenna’s mom married Caleb’s dad.

Remembering their breakup still sliced Jenna’s heart with pain.

“You can’t do this to us!” Jenna had screamed at her mother that fateful day.

“Sweetie, please, you’ve got to understand.” Mom had tried to put a reassuring hand on her shoulder, but Jenna flinched away. “What will people think? You’re almost brother and sister now.”

“That’s bullshit, Mom.” Jenna had whirled on her with pain and anger swirling in her belly. She’d thought she’d puke right there on her bedroom floor. “We’re stepbrother and stepsister. Big deal. And you and John have only been married a couple months. It’s not like Caleb and I grew up as family.”

“Don’t use that language around me, young lady.” Mom’s blue eyes shot daggers. “This argument is over, Jenna. You and Caleb can’t see each other anymore. I’m sorry, but you’re family now. It wouldn’t be appropriate.”

Jenna had thrown herself on her princess canopy bed and buried her face in her pillow. She cried until she could barely breathe.

How could Mom and John do this to them? They’d been together all through high school. At eighteen, four years of exclusive dating had seemed like a lifetime. She couldn’t imagine her life without Caleb in it.

Alex and I had been friends since grade eleven. I’d had a crush on him from the moment I first saw him, but he didn’t even know I was alive. He was the star athlete—captain of the basketball team. All the girls wanted him and he’d made his way through the entire cheerleading squad by the time we graduated. What would a tall, dark, and hunky jock like him want with me? I was the frumpy, brainy girl with too much junk in her trunk.

Plus I was terrified of most guys I had crushes on. They’d say, “Hi, Serena,” and all I could manage was a squeaky, “Hello,” in return.

We became friends because I tutored him in math. He had mild dyslexia and he’d reverse his numbers when factoring quadratic equations.

Alex wasn’t like a lot of jocks in our school. He was nice to everyone, even the geeky kids like me. He’d talk to anyone and didn’t believe in all that clique bullshit a lot of popular kids did. Another reason I had the major hots for him.

“You make it look so simple,” he’d tell me during our tutoring sessions, smiling that panty-melting smile. “I wish I had your brains, Serena.”

I’d get all flustered and hope I wasn’t blushing fire hydrant red. “You’re getting a lot better at factoring.” My voice would raise an octave as I told him this. “Practice makes perfect.”

“I’ll never be as smart as you.” Those powder blue eyes would bore into me. Was he undressing me with them? How I hoped.

“Everyone’s smart in their own way, Alex. Don’t put yourself down.”

Again that panty-melting smile would flash. Had I only been braver, I’d have begged him to tear off my clothes and take me right there, on my mom’s kitchen table.

Never in a million years did I think he’d become my stepbrother. But here it was, one year after graduation, and my mom was marrying Alex’s dad.

Mickie inhaled sharply as his warm, wide palm slid across her lower back then over her hip. He held her close against him while she spread mayo on their sandwiches.

“I’m good,” she said, trying to keep her voice even as his nearness intoxicated her. “Working on a hot story I hope my boss doesn’t hold up for too long.”

“Oh yeah? What’s it about?”

“Can’t say too much.” She gave him an impish smile. “It’s very hush hush.”

He snagged a slice of cheese off the counter and popped it in his mouth. “So you’re staying the summer with me and Hunter?” Another devilishly handsome smile followed the question.

Mickie tried to keep her breathing even and chided herself for such a schoolgirl reaction. “Yeah, Dad asked me to stay here. Said you were coming home, and he knows what happens when he leaves you and Hunter alone together.”

Shane laughed at this and held a hand to his chest, feigning innocence. “What? We’re angels.”

Mickie giggled and handed him his finished sandwich, but he just pushed it aside and turned her in his arms so she faced him.

He trailed a soft fingertip along the length of her jaw, then he traced her lips. “This could be one fun summer. But do you really think you can make me behave?”

It had been almost twelve months since she’d spent any real time with her stepbrothers. Plus it had been over a year since she’d broken up with her longtime boyfriend. And it had been a dry year sexually. Her ex had been a reporter at the paper, too, and he’d cheated on her with one of the staff photographers. An old flame of his.

Now, as her stepbrother’s lips inched closer to hers, Mickie didn’t think she’d have the strength to refuse Shane this time. “I’m gonna try,” she whispered in answer to his question. “But if you keep this up—”

Her words were stolen as his mouth brushed ever so lightly over hers. “Hmmm…”He hummed against her lips. “I wonder if Dad has anything for dessert in there?”

Then he pulled away from her. A surge of disappointment filled Mickie’s chest, but he held onto her hand as he walked closer to the fridge and bent to see what was inside. What was he up to? Her heartbeat upped its pace.

“Ah, perfect,” he said, reaching in for something. “He doesn’t have cherries, but…” His gaze glued to her pert nipples, showing through her bra and white tank top.

Mickie’s throat went dry when he held up the can of whipped cream. She held up her hands. “Look, Shane, I’m suppose to make sure you behave, not make out with you.”
